Peteca: Hand-Hit Shuttlecock Play
Japanese name: ペテカ(手で打つ羽根遊び)
Materials
- 1 soft children’s peteca
- Optional: one standing-position marker per player
How to play
- Two to six players form a circle, leaving space so their hands cannot collide. Agree to strike the feathered peteca’s base with an open palm and never aim at faces.
- The starter holds it in one hand and gently taps the base with the other, sending a high, curved pass to the next player. Call the receiver’s name first.
- The receiver strikes once with one hand without catching, sending it to someone else. In this cooperative version, avoid consecutive hits by the same person and include everyone evenly.
- On a drop, everyone stops and the nearest person retrieves it. Nobody leaves the game. Restart with someone who has not started yet. Do not dive for it.
- Choose targets such as five consecutive hits, then one hit per person. Move to the next target after success. Rest after 5 minutes and change positions and starting players.
Ways to adapt
Preschool: catch and hit with a caregiver. Younger primary: short distances. Older primary: optionally progress to singles across a net. The version here is cooperative and uses neither net nor scoring.
