Snowsnake: Slide along a Snow Lane
Japanese name: スノースネーク(雪のレーンで滑らせる)
Materials
- A smooth, purpose-made wooden snow snake about 75–90 cm long with a rounded tip
- Distance markers
- Warm outdoor clothing and gloves
- Snow-groove tools for adult use
How to play
- An adult prepares a smooth, straight groove in the snow. Mark the travel direction, off-limits space on both sides, the start line and a waiting area behind it. One person plays at a time.
- An adult demonstrates first. Align the wooden tool’s tip with the groove and push it forwards low from underneath so it slides over the snow. Never toss it upwards.
- Nobody steps forwards until it stops. An adult marks where the tip finishes, then signals before retrieving the tool.
- Give each player three attempts using the same lane and start line. The next player approaches the start only after retrieval is complete.
- Compare each person’s furthest position and discuss which release slid well, then finish.
Ways to adapt
Do not use this as a free-play activity for preschool or younger primary school children. Without the dedicated tool, sufficient snow and a suitable instructor, offer cultural information instead of attempting the activity.
