No.133

Finger-Total Conversation Topics (Adojan)

Japanese name: お題じゃんけん アドジャン

Materials

  • A topic list numbered 0–9

How to play

  1. Show a topic list numbered 0–9. Use comfortable topics such as favorite colors, imaginary places to visit or favorite animals; avoid unwanted disclosures.
  2. On “Adojan, go!”, everyone shows 0–5 fingers on one hand. Add all fingers and use the total’s units digit: 12 means topic 2.
  3. Take turns giving a brief answer. Passing or saying “Still thinking” is fine; do not reject others’ answers.
  4. After everyone’s turn, show fingers again. If the same number repeats, use the next adjacent topic number. Finish after 3–5 topics.

Ways to adapt

Younger primary school children: two children with an adult. Middle-primary years and older: use the units digit. Preschool children: drawing numbered lots may be clearer.
