Chapter 6 · Icebreakers

No.128

Make a Number Group

Japanese name: 数集まり

Materials

  • Number cards from 2 to 5

How to play

  1. Prepare number cards 2–5. Practice walking safely and stopping on the signal.
  2. Say, for example, “Groups of three!” and show 3. Invite nearby people into groups of three.
  3. Completed groups raise hands. An adult joins an incomplete group, or adjust the final group so everyone belongs.
  4. Count together, separate and repeat 3–5 times with other numbers such as two or four.
  5. Finish in the group size needed for the next activity. Do not single out ungrouped players or impose penalties.

Ways to adapt

Preschool children: groups of 2–3 with adult help. Younger primary school children: groups of 2–5. Older primary school children: listen to a number of claps.
