Chapter 7 · Campfires and Candle Ceremonies

No.151

Improvise a Skit from Sound Cues

Japanese name: 音から動く即興スタンツ

Materials

  • Paper for making sounds
  • A clock
  • Chairs if needed

How to play

  1. In a performance area away from the fire, divide each group into 2–3 actors and 2–3 sound makers. Decide seated positions and movement limits in advance, and make sure everyone can be seen.
  2. Choose three sounds and agree on their meanings. For example, rubbing paper means wind, light fingertip taps on knees mean rain, and a soft clap means something falling. Hear each sound once to check it together.
  3. Actors begin in an imaginary setting such as a park. About every 5 seconds, a sound maker gives one cue. Actors respond immediately to the suggested event and continue the story.
  4. Do not announce the sound order or overlap cues. Use only three or four cues. After 30–45 seconds, the facilitator announces the end and everyone bows. The audience watches quietly and applauds at the end.
  5. Swap actors and sound makers and try again. After all groups finish, share what scenes the sounds produced. Put away the props to close.

Ways to adapt

Preschool children: react to one sound with an adult. Younger primary school children: preview the cue order. Older primary school children and adults: cooperate without advance warning. Everyone can act and make sounds using only the upper body while seated.
