Clapping Orchestra: Layer Different Rhythms
Japanese name: 拍手オーケストラ(違うリズムを重ねる)
Materials
- Mats or stable chairs
- Optional: three cards showing the assigned beats
How to play
- Leave the fire to its designated manager. Sit in three groups. Choose a conductor to count 1–4 repeatedly at a steady pace, and feel the shared beat together.
- Group A claps on beats 1 and 3. Group B gently pats their knees on beats 2 and 4. Group C gently taps the floor with their toes on beat 1 only. Stay silent on your other beats.
- Practise each group separately, then keep the same shared count of 1–4. Bring in A on the next 1, B on the following 1, and C on the next 1. Earlier groups continue their own pattern.
- When the conductor points to a group and opens a hand, that group joins on the next beat 1; a closed hand means rest. Keep sounds quiet enough to hear one another. If the rhythm breaks down, stop everyone and restart in the same order.
- Play together for about 30 seconds, then stop when the conductor raises both hands. Play three times in total, changing the sound assignments and inviting volunteer conductors. Discuss how the sounds combined.
Ways to adapt
Preschool children and younger primary school children can join an adult in two groups: clapping and knee pats. Replace foot sounds with light fingertip taps on your own palm if needed. Older primary school children can create their own beat assignments.
