No.187

Drawing Relay

Japanese name: お絵かき伝言

Materials

  • One sheet of paper per person
  • Pens
  • A clock or timer

How to play

  1. Choose a line order. Tell only the first person an easy-to-draw object, such as an umbrella.
  2. The first person has 30 seconds to draw it, then shows it only to the next person for 10 seconds. Do not add any writing or say the answer aloud.
  3. The next person turns the previous picture face down, draws the remembered shape on their own paper, and shows it to the next person. Continue the same method to the last person.
  4. The final person says what they think the picture represents. Lay everyone's drawings in sequence and observe the changes. Choose a different first person and play again.

Ways to adapt

Preschool children: draw shapes with an adult in a pair. Younger primary school children: simple objects. Older primary school children: two details, such as a cat wearing a hat.
