Flipbook Animation

Japanese name: パラパラまんが

Materials

  • A small notebook or notepad
  • Pencils and coloured pencils

How to play

  1. Test whether you can hold the notebook's edge and flip its pages quickly. Choose about ten pages and plan a simple shape, such as a small circle, in the same general area.
  2. Work backwards from the last page, changing the picture's position or size a little on each preceding page. Draw near an edge where the picture will be visible during flipping.
  3. After drawing about ten pages, align their edges. Let them slip gradually from under your thumb to flip through them and see what movement appears.
  4. If the movement jumps, add an intermediate drawing or redraw a frame. Invent your own movement, such as a rotating circle or lengthening line.
  5. Give the work a title and share it with others who wish to exchange. Viewers try different flipping speeds and finish by describing a change they liked.

Ways to adapt

Younger primary school children: circles on ten pages. Older primary school children: a continuous sequence.
