Chapter 8 · Word Games and Logic

No.168

When, Where, Who, What Happened?

Japanese name: いつ どこで だれが どうした

Materials

  • Small sheets of paper
  • Pencils
  • Four boxes or bags

How to play

  1. Set out four boxes labeled When, Where, Who, and What Happened. Give each person four slips of paper.
  2. Write one answer for each category. For “Who,” use animals or imaginary characters; do not make real participants the targets of jokes.
  3. Fold each slip and put it in the matching box. Mix each box. The facilitator draws one slip from each, arranges them in order, and reads the resulting sentence.
  4. For example: “Tomorrow morning, on the moon, a cat did exercises.” Let several people take turns drawing and reading. Finish when the slips run out or after ten sentences.

Ways to adapt

Preschool children: draw from picture cards prepared by an adult. Younger primary school children: use two categories. Children in the middle primary school grades and up: write all four categories themselves.
