Clap on Multiples

Japanese name: 倍数で拍手

Materials

  • None; an optional number chart may help

How to play

  1. Sit in a circle and choose a starting person. Go clockwise, saying one number per person: 1, then 2, and so on.
  2. Clap once instead of saying any multiple of 3. Check examples together before starting: 3, 6, 9, 12, and so on.
  3. For example, the first six turns are “1, 2, clap, 4, 5, clap.” A clap uses one person's whole turn, then play passes to the next person.
  4. After a mistake, pause, check the correct response for that number, and retry from the same person. Reaching 30 together is a success. Change the starting person and play again.

Ways to adapt

Preschool children: count 1–10 with an adult without the substitution. Younger primary school children: clap on even numbers. Older primary school children: clap on multiples of 3 or 5.
