Chapter 6 · Icebreakers

No.136

Name and Action

Japanese name: 名前アクション

Materials

  • No special equipment is needed.

How to play

  1. Stand or sit in a circle. Choose a preferred name and one small action possible on the spot. A color or other chosen label may replace a name.
  2. The first person says, for example, “I’m Midori,” and shows an action such as waving or curling the arms.
  3. Everyone else repeats that name and copies the action once. Do not change it to an unwanted name or imitate mockingly.
  4. Continue around the circle. Anyone avoiding speech may just act while the facilitator supplies the name.
  5. If time remains, the facilitator calls one name and everyone recalls its action to finish.

Ways to adapt

Preschool children: choose an action with an adult. Younger primary school children: one person at a time. Older primary school children: recall names and actions at the end.
