Chapter 6 · Icebreakers

No.135

Name Toss

Japanese name: ネームトス

Materials

How to play

  1. Form a circle within comfortable passing distance and confirm preferred names or nicknames. Real names are unnecessary.
  2. Call the intended receiver’s name. Wait for a readiness signal such as open hands, then make a gentle underarm throw.
  3. The receiver names someone else and passes. Include everyone who has not yet received.
  4. Once everyone has received, pause and discuss comfortable speed and distance. Set a simple next goal, such as repeating the same order.
  5. After a drop, retrieve and resume there. Finish after 2–3 circuits or change the starting player and repeat.

Ways to adapt

Preschool children: hand to a neighbor. Younger primary school children: roll. Older primary school children: remember a passing order that includes everyone.
