No.34

Nature Treasure Hunt

Japanese name: 自然の宝探し

Materials

  • A prompt list
  • A small bag if needed

How to play

  1. An adult prepares 3–5 nature-treasure prompts, such as something round, something that looks fluffy or something you like.
  2. Explain the prompts, activity boundary and meeting time. Agree not to pick growing plants.
  3. Stay together and find objects each person regards as treasures. For things that cannot be collected, remember the location or draw them.
  4. Regroup after about 10 minutes. Present finds and explain why they match a prompt.
  5. Finish after everyone shares. Return objects that do not need to be kept to where they were found.

Ways to adapt

Preschool children: 3 prompts. Older primary school children: 5 prompts involving senses as well as shape.
