Paper-Helicopter Spin Comparison

Japanese name: 紙コプターの回転くらべ

Materials

  • Several adult-made paper helicopters of the same shape but different sizes
  • Paper for recording observations
  • A timer, if needed

How to play

  1. Prepare the paper helicopters and agree on one release height, such as chest level. Take turns releasing them while standing on the floor; never climb on tables or chairs.
  2. One person lightly holds the end of the body, then opens their fingers without throwing. Others stand a little back and observe the direction of spin and the descent.
  3. Test the same helicopter three times, then switch to another size. If it does not spin, ask an adult to check whether its blades have folded shut.
  4. After everyone has tried, identify shapes that fell slowly or spun well. Primary school children may time drops from the same height.
  5. Change just one feature, such as how far the blades open, and test again. Compare before and after, then finish by sharing one discovery each.

Ways to adapt

Preschool children: ready-made models. Younger primary school children: compare sizes. Older primary school children: change one condition.
