Chapter 6 · Icebreakers

No.134

Picture-Card Exchange

Japanese name: 絵カード交換

Materials

  • Five identical picture cards per person, with different pictures assigned to different people

How to play

  1. Start with five identical picture cards each, using different pictures for different players. Show the available pictures and demonstrate a trade.
  2. Walk to a partner and invite an exchange by words or gestures. With agreement, each chooses one card and hands it over simultaneously.
  3. Aim for five different pictures. You may trade with the same person again, but never take cards without permission.
  4. Show five completed types to the facilitator. You may keep helping others by continuing to trade.
  5. At the time limit, lay out cards and notice increased variety and successful exchanges.

Ways to adapt

Preschool children: three cards of three types. Younger primary school children: five types. Older primary school children: plan trades that remove duplicate pictures.
