Chapter 11 · Hand Games and Rhythm

No.224

Create a Four-Beat Body Rhythm

Japanese name: からだでつくる四拍リズム

Materials

  • None
  • Optional: paper and pens to draw the movements

How to play

  1. Choose and try about four sounds or movements, such as clapping, gentle knee pats, pretending to snap fingers, and a silent rest.
  2. One person suggests a four-beat sequence, such as “knee, clap, rest, clap.” Everyone copies it slowly in the same order.
  3. Invite a suggestion from everyone, then choose two patterns the group likes. Anyone preferring not to suggest may help choose or count instead.
  4. Join the chosen patterns in order to make an eight-beat piece. Agree on start and finish cues and repeat it 2–3 times.
  5. Groups perform for one another. Listeners name one sound they liked or a moment of coordination. Finish by copying one group's piece together.

Ways to adapt

Preschool children: two beats. Younger primary school children: four. Older primary school children: alternate two groups’ rhythms.
