Chapter 3 · Ball Games and Target Games

No.82

Rolling Dodgeball

Japanese name: 転がしドッジボール

Materials

  • One soft rolling ball
  • Court markings

How to play

  1. Make two teams. Choose 1–2 outfield players per team; the others are infield players. Mark both infields and the surrounding outfields.
  2. On the signal, gently roll toward opponents’ feet inside their infield. Do not throw the ball into the air.
  3. A rolling ball touching a player’s foot sends that player to the outfield. An airborne hit does not count; do not aim throws at faces or bodies.
  4. An outfield player who rolls a valid hit may return to the infield. Do not walk holding the ball; observe throwing positions and boundaries.
  5. Stop after 2 minutes and compare remaining infield players. Change the starting outfield players, rest and play once more.

Ways to adapt

Preschool children: use a circle with an adult rolling from outside. Older primary school children: two teams.
