No.25

Sound Mapping

Japanese name: 音の地図

Materials

  • Paper
  • Pencils or crayons
  • A firm writing board

How to play

  1. Sit in the safe area and mark yourself at the center of your paper. Agree to listen without moving around.
  2. Listen and draw a line or symbol in the direction of each sound. Pictures or words are also fine.
  3. Choose a system you understand: for example, nearby sounds close to the center and distant sounds farther out.
  4. After about 3 minutes, stop and compare maps with someone nearby. Discuss how people noticed different sounds in the same place.
  5. Listen for 1 more minute and add anything you wish. Collect the paper and tools to finish.

Ways to adapt

Preschool children: an adult records. Older primary school children: explain what the symbols mean.
