No.47

Mystery Object: Guess by Touch

Japanese name: さわって中身当て

Materials

  • An opaque cloth bag or a box with a hand opening
  • Safe objects, such as sponges, cloth or large blocks
  • Picture cards showing possible answers

How to play

  1. An adult first shows the objects and checks that each is safe to touch. Keep eyes open and use no blindfold; only a hand goes into the bag.
  2. The adult puts one object in the bag. One player feels it without looking inside, using shape, softness and texture as clues.
  3. Name it or point to a candidate picture. Reveal the object and freely describe how it felt.
  4. Change players until everyone has tried 1–2 times. Anyone uncomfortable with touch may identify objects by sight or help set the questions.

Ways to adapt

Preschool children: two candidate objects. Younger primary school children: 3–5. Older primary school children: use similarly shaped objects and describe their materials.
