No.340

Court Shuffleboard

Japanese name: シャフルボード(コート式)

Materials

  • A court-shuffleboard mat and cues
  • 4 discs in each of two colours
  • A score sheet

How to play

  1. Use a court with scoring areas of ten, eight and seven from the triangle’s tip, followed by a minus-ten area. Choose colours, take four discs per side and decide who starts.
  2. From the marked starting position, push discs along the surface with a cue, alternating until all eight are played. Do not throw discs or raise the cue. Spectators wait beside the court.
  3. Discs may strike opposing discs. The facilitator removes out-of-bounds discs and those failing to reach the required far cross-line before the next shot.
  4. Once all eight stop, score only discs wholly within a scoring area. Touching a boundary scores zero. Subtract ten for a disc in the minus-ten area. Do not move discs during judging.
  5. Record, retrieve and change who starts. This version compares totals over four rounds. In doubles, partners at the opposite end take over shooting. Give everyone equal turns.

Ways to adapt

Younger primary: use a shortened-distance mat. Preschool: try holding a cue with a caregiver. Four rounds and alternating starts are this short-play adaptation.
