Chapter 16 · Indoor Games from Around the World

No.318

Signs: Pass the Secret Signal

Japanese name: サインズ(ひみつの合図渡し)

Materials

  • A timer

How to play

  1. Sit in a circle. Each person chooses a short personal gesture, such as touching their nose or opening a hand. Demonstrate them one at a time so everyone learns the signs.
  2. Choose a guesser. While they face away, secretly choose the first holder of an imaginary signal. The guesser returns to the centre.
  3. The holder performs the intended receiver’s gesture. The receiver acknowledges by performing the sender’s gesture; only then does ownership transfer. Until that reply, the sender remains the holder.
  4. Only the current holder may send it onwards. The guesser watches and names the person they think holds it. Everyone pauses while that person confirms whether the guess is correct.
  5. A correct guess swaps guesser and holder. Otherwise continue. After 1 minute without a correct guess, choose someone who has not tried guessing. Finish after five changes of guesser.

Ways to adapt

Younger primary: practise with four or five players and a visible sign list. Choose hand or face movements everyone can make comfortably.
