No.155
Our Shared Memory Scroll
Japanese name: みんなの思い出絵巻
Materials
- One large paper card per person
- A long sheet of paper and drawing materials
- Glue or removable tape
- Several LED candles for the display
How to play
- Mark the day's sequence from left to right on a long sheet, with sections such as morning, noon, and evening. Give everyone a card and ask them to choose one remembered scene. Keep the room bright while making the pictures.
- Draw the chosen scene and add a few words if you wish. Do not judge drawing skill; preschool children may use only colors or shapes. Adults add only words the child asks them to write.
- Show the cards in turn and attach them in the appropriate time section. Place repeated events side by side. Do not erase different impressions or merge everyone's work into one picture.
- Once all cards are displayed, an adult switches on the LEDs and places them a little away from the paper. Keep enough light to view the scroll. Those who wish may introduce just one detail in their own picture.
- The facilitator traces the day's sequence with a finger. Restore the room lighting and have an adult switch off the LEDs. Display or photograph the work only within participants' and guardians' consent; agree beforehand whether it will be kept or taken home.
Ways to adapt
Preschool children: pictures or colors only. Younger primary school children: add one word to a picture. Older primary school children and adults: discuss the chronological arrangement.
