No.205
Can Stilts
Japanese name: 缶ぽっくり
Materials
- Low commercial cup stilts, or sturdy can stilts made and inspected by an adult
- Markers for a short straight course
How to play
- An adult checks bases, rims, and cord knots. For homemade can stilts, use sturdy steel cans and cover sharp cut edges and holes.
- Place the stilts side by side and hold their cords. With an adult alongside, step onto them one foot at a time and practise standing still.
- Pull the cords gently upward. Move the right hand with the right foot, then the left hand with the left foot, in small forward steps. Look ahead and do not run.
- Begin on a straight 2–3 m course. Stop before stepping down one foot at a time. If balance is lost, immediately put both feet back on the floor.
- Each person makes two walks, without racing out and back. Once comfortable, add one wide turn. Stop the equipment before passing it to the next person.
Ways to adapt
Preschool children: low commercial equipment with adult support. Primary school children: add a gentle turn.
