No.167

Drawing Shiritori

Japanese name: 絵しりとり

Materials

  • Paper
  • Pencils or pens

How to play

  1. Choose a turn order. The first person draws an object without writing its name or saying it aloud.
  2. The next person identifies the picture and draws an object whose Japanese name starts with its final sound. For example, neko (cat) can lead to koma (spinning top).
  3. Keep earlier pictures visible and add each new picture beside them. Allow one question or a pass if needed. Pass the same sheet through to the last person.
  4. At the end, name all pictures from the beginning and check the chain. Do not blame different interpretations. Change who starts and play again.

Ways to adapt

Preschool children: arrange picture cards instead of drawing. Younger primary school children may ask questions. Older primary school children can try waiting until the circuit ends before asking.
