No.31

Nature Connections

Japanese name: 自然のつながり探し

Materials

  • Drawing paper
  • Writing tools
  • Safe collectable fallen leaves or similar objects; photographs or drawings may replace them

How to play

  1. An adult explains the activity boundary and meeting time. Each group chooses one natural object to start with.
  2. Find another object with something in common, such as both being round or both being nuts. Be able to explain the connection.
  3. Find a third object connected to the second. Vary the reasons, considering shape, color or texture rather than repeating one reason.
  4. Regroup after about 10 minutes. Draw or write the objects on paper and describe the shared feature between each pair.
  5. Each group presents its chain. Finish by sharing unexpected ways of seeing things rather than only comparing chain lengths.

Ways to adapt

Younger primary school children: connect 3 objects. Older primary school children: connect at least 5 objects without repeating a reason.
