Chapter 1 · Outdoor Games

No.27

Find a Natural Match

Japanese name: 同じものを見つけよう

Materials

  • 3–5 types of fallen leaves or similar objects that may be collected at the site
  • One cloth

How to play

  1. An adult lays 3–5 types of safe fallen leaves or nuts on a cloth. Explain what may be collected and what must not be touched.
  2. Everyone studies the shapes, colors and sizes for about 30 seconds. An adult then covers the samples.
  3. Walk in the agreed area with an adult or partner and find similar objects. Do not pick growing plants; remembering a matching object’s location is enough.
  4. Regroup after about 3 minutes and compare finds with the samples. Notice how objects of the same kind can still differ.
  5. Change the samples and repeat. Return objects that need not be kept and collect the equipment.

Ways to adapt

Preschool children: use 1–2 samples. Older primary school children: memorize 5 samples.
