No.37

Score Orienteering

Japanese name: オリエンテーリング

Materials

  • Course maps
  • Control markers with numbers and symbols
  • Answer sheets and writing tools
  • A clock

How to play

  1. An adult places 5–10 controls in a safe area and marks their locations and point values on a map. Identify the base, off-limits areas and finish time.
  2. Assign map-reading, recording and timekeeping roles, then discuss the route. An adult accompanies early-primary groups.
  3. Start on the signal and stay together while finding map locations. Copy each control’s symbol onto the answer sheet.
  4. You may skip difficult locations. If unsure where you are, return to the last known location.
  5. Return together by the deadline. Add the points for correctly found controls, check people and equipment, and finish.

Ways to adapt

Younger primary school children: adult accompaniment. Older primary school children: discuss route order and point values.
