Materials

  • A plain 5-row, 6-column grid
  • 12 counters in each of two colours

How to play

  1. Start with an empty 5 × 6 board and twelve counters of one colour per player beside it. Choose who starts and alternate one move each.
  2. On your turn, either place one reserve counter in an empty square or move a board counter one square horizontally or vertically into an empty square. You need not place the whole supply first.
  3. You may instead capture by jumping horizontally or vertically over one adjacent opposing counter into the empty square immediately beyond. Remove the jumped counter. No diagonal moves.
  4. After a jumping capture, remove one additional opposing counter of your choice from anywhere on the board. If none remains there, take only the jumped counter. Allow just one jump per turn.
  5. Win by exhausting the opponent’s whole supply, including reserves and board counters. In this introduction, an undecided game after 20 minutes is a draw. Change who starts, then count all counters when packing away.

Ways to adapt

Younger primary: try four counters each, with adult help for the extra capture. Preschool: offer arranging play using large pieces rather than small parts.
