ABCD
Bagh Chal: 25 intersections. Dark pieces show the tigers’ starting positions.

Diagram key

A
Start with 4 tigers at the corners.
B
Keep all 20 goats outside the board at first. Place them on the board during play.
C
Move to an adjacent point connected by a line.
D
Jump in a straight line to capture.

Materials

  • A bagh-chal board
  • 4 tiger counters
  • 20 goat counters

How to play

  1. Place tigers at the four corners and keep goats off the board. Choose the tiger and goat players. Alternate one move each, with goats starting.
  2. Place one goat on an empty intersection per turn. Goats already on the board cannot move until all twenty have been placed. Captured goats are not replaced.
  3. Move one tiger along a line to an adjacent empty point, or jump straight over one adjacent goat to the empty point immediately beyond, removing that goat.
  4. After all goats have been placed, they too move one at a time along a line to an adjacent empty point. Neither side may jump its own counters. Goats cannot capture tigers.
  5. Tigers win by capturing five goats; goats win by blocking all four tigers. A goat side with no legal move, or the same position with the same player to move occurring three times, is a draw. Swap roles.

Ways to adapt

Introduction: discuss moves openly. Older primary and adults: individual play.
