Materials

  • A yut-nori board and 4 counters in each of two colours
  • 4 yut sticks with distinguishable flat and rounded faces
  • A cloth for casting the sticks

How to play

  1. Start with all counters off the board. Take turns casting four sticks low. One to four flat faces up score that number; no flat faces up scores five. A four or five earns another cast.
  2. Use each result entirely on one counter, either entering a new one or advancing one already on the board. Move after each cast. Follow the outer route in the diagram’s direction.
  3. Landing on an opponent sends their counter off the board. A capture with a result of one, two or three earns one extra cast. Friendly counters on the same point may stack and travel together.
  4. After landing exactly on a corner or the centre, the next move may follow a shortcut along the board’s lines. A captured stack sends all its counters off the board.
  5. A counter finishes after completing its route and passing the exit. First to finish all four wins. This introduction omits backward results. Change roles to finish.

Ways to adapt

Younger primary: two counters on the outer route. Older primary and adults: four counters with shortcuts.
