Materials

  • The triangular tiger-and-goat board shown
  • 3 tiger counters
  • 15 goat counters

How to play

  1. Place tigers at the triangle’s apex and the two inner points immediately below it. Keep goats off the board. Alternate one move each, with goats first.
  2. The goat player places one counter on an empty point each turn. Goats cannot move until all fifteen have been placed. Continue placing the unplayed supply even after captures.
  3. A tiger moves along a line to an adjacent empty point. If an adjacent goat has an empty point immediately beyond it on the same straight line, jump over and remove that goat.
  4. After all fifteen goats are placed, goats may move to adjacent empty points. They cannot capture. Neither side jumps its own counters. A tiger captures at most one goat per turn.
  5. Tigers win by capturing five goats; goats win by blocking all three tigers. If goats have no move, or the same position and player to move occur three times, draw. Swap roles.

Ways to adapt

Older primary: discuss moves together. Adults: ordinary play.
