No.24
How Many Sounds?
Japanese name: 音いくつ
Materials
- No equipment; a mat if needed
How to play
- Sit in a place where adults can see you, away from roads and water. Explain that they will spend one minute quietly searching for the sound.
- You can close your eyes or open them. Without moving, listen to your surroundings and count on your fingers when you find different types of sounds.
- When you are unsure whether birds, wind, footsteps, etc. are the same type, count them according to how you feel. Do not check your answers out loud.
- Finish with a signal and introduce the sounds you heard one by one. Do not rank based on the number of sounds heard.
- Try again in a slightly different location or direction, and finish by talking about the difference in how it sounds.
Ways to adapt
Preschool children: 30 seconds. Older primary school children: distinguish nearby and distant sounds.
