Materials

  • A six-sided pirinola top with instructions, or a six-sided die and instruction key
  • 10 large play counters per person
  • A shared central bowl

How to play

  1. Give everyone ten counters and put two each into the central bowl. Use them only as counting objects, never exchangeable for money or prizes. Play clockwise.
  2. On your turn, spin and follow the upper face. Show a key for the six instructions: take one, take two, take all, put one, put two, everyone puts two.
  3. “Take” moves counters from the bowl to your supply; “put” moves them from your supply to the bowl. If the bowl has fewer than required, take only what is available.
  4. Whenever the bowl holds zero to two counters, everyone adds two. In this version, anyone short of counters adds only what they have and can keep taking turns even with none.
  5. One spin each completes a round. After ten rounds, compare supplies. Pass the spinning turn each time; neighbours help read instructions and check counts.

Ways to adapt

Preschool: operate large counters or number cards with a caregiver. Younger primary: a picture instruction chart. Older primary: try Spanish face labels. Describe a die substitution as an adaptation.
