No.4

Daruma Action Freeze

Japanese name: 王様だるまさんがころんだ

Materials

  • Start-line and goal markers

How to play

  1. Choose one caller. Everyone else lines up 5–10 m away from the caller. Agree on and practice three safe actions, such as swimming and sleeping.
  2. Facing away, the caller names an action, such as “Daruma is swimming,” then turns around.
  3. The other players approach while performing that action and freeze in its pose when the caller looks.
  4. Anyone doing the wrong action or continuing to move returns to the start and immediately rejoins.
  5. The first player to reach the goal in front of the caller becomes the next caller. End each round after 2 minutes; if nobody arrives, give a volunteer the role.

Ways to adapt

Preschool children: use two actions. Older primary school children: use four previously practiced actions.
