No.316
Flinch: A Throw or a Feint?
Japanese name: フリンチ(投げる? 投げない?)
Materials
- 1 lightweight, soft ball
How to play
- Form a circle and choose a centre thrower. Circle players lightly rest their hands together in front of their chest, at a comfortable catching distance from the centre.
- The centre player looks at one receiver and either makes a gentle underarm throw or pretends to throw. Never aim at faces or use force.
- For a real throw, open your hands, catch and return the ball. For a pretend throw, keep your hands still.
- A receiver who misses a catch or moves their hands for a fake swaps with the centre player. An unreachable or difficult throw does not count as a mistake; throw again.
- If nobody swaps after ten throws, select a thrower who has not tried it. Finish once everyone has tried throwing or after 10 minutes.
Ways to adapt
Younger primary: start with ordinary catches and no fakes. Someone uneasy about balls can receive a soft fabric bundle at shorter range. Agree on their preferred way to join.
