Werewolf: A Beginner Session Format

Japanese name: 人狼 入門の運営例

Materials

  • Role cards: 2 werewolves, 1 seer and 6 villagers
  • Numbered voting cards for the participants
  • A timer

How to play

  1. Deal one role card face down to each of the nine players, excluding the facilitator. Each reads only their own card. The village side—villagers and seer—wins by eliminating both werewolves. Werewolves win when their surviving number equals or exceeds the surviving village side.
  2. On the first night, all players close their eyes. At the cue, werewolves open their eyes to identify each other, then close them. Next the seer opens their eyes and points to one other player. The facilitator silently indicates whether that player is a werewolf. Nobody is eliminated this night.
  3. Discuss for 4 minutes during the day. Players may claim roles or lie. Everyone simultaneously votes for one other player. Eliminate the person with most votes. For a tie, hold one runoff among the tied candidates; if tied again, eliminate nobody that day.
  4. On later nights, surviving werewolves open their eyes and silently agree on one surviving non-werewolf to indicate to the facilitator. At the next cue, a surviving seer checks one other survivor. At dawn, eliminate the person chosen by the werewolves.
  5. Do not reveal eliminated players’ roles. They no longer discuss or vote. Repeat days and nights, with the facilitator checking the winning conditions after every elimination.
  6. At the end, reveal all roles. If undecided after 30 minutes, declare a draw. Everyone rejoins and roles are redealt for a new game.

Ways to adapt

A new facilitator should prepare a written order of night-time cues and the numbers needed for each side to win.
