Chapter 4 · Sports Day and Team Challenges

No.107

Low-Obstacle Race

Japanese name: 低い障害物レース

Materials

How to play

  1. An adult makes a short route, such as stepping on three marks, stepping over a soft low obstacle and circling a cone.
  2. Walk through together to learn order and direction. Provide a bypass for obstacles someone cannot cross.
  3. Start one at a time and follow the sequence. Wait if the gap ahead becomes too small.
  4. If an obstacle moves, stop while an adult replaces it. Do not jump high or dive.
  5. At the finish, cue the next player. Everyone completing the route is success. Change one feature and try again.

Ways to adapt

Preschool children: step over obstacles. Older primary school children: plan the route together.
