Materials

  • A board connecting eight outer points and one centre point
  • 4 counters in each of two colours

How to play

  1. Mark an octagon’s eight vertices and its centre. Join neighbouring vertices and connect each to the centre. Put your four counters on four consecutive outer points and the opponent’s on the remaining four. Only the centre is empty.
  2. Dark starts. Alternate moving one counter along a line to an adjacent empty point. No jumping or captures; exactly one point always remains empty.
  3. A counter may move from the outer ring to the centre only if at least one of its two neighbours on the outer ring is an opposing counter. Apply this restriction on every turn.
  4. A centre counter may move to the empty outer point. Moving between outer points is also allowed along an edge to the adjacent empty point.
  5. Win when the opponent has no legal move on their turn. The players may agree to a draw. Change who starts for another game.

Ways to adapt

Begin by pointing out legal counters together. Discuss on the board why a particular counter may not enter the centre.
