Crokinole
Japanese name: クロキノール
Materials
- A crokinole board
- At least 12 matching discs in each of two colours
- A score sheet
How to play
- Sit opposite each other with six discs each in different colours. This introduction uses fewer discs. Place each shooting disc on your sector’s outer shooting line.
- Alternate flicking one disc onto the board, aiming for the centre hole or high-scoring rings. If opposing discs remain, one of your discs must contact at least one opposing disc.
- If no opposing disc remains, the shot disc or one of your discs it moves must finish inside or touching the 15-point circle. A shot failing either applicable requirement is removed, along with all your own discs moved by that shot.
- A disc lying flat in the centre hole is removed and kept as 20 points. After both players shoot six, add board scores: inner ring 15, middle 10, outer five. A disc touching a line takes the lower value.
- The higher round total earns two match points; a tie earns one each. Play four rounds and compare match points. Alternate starting players each round and change seats for another match.
Ways to adapt
Younger primary: practise centre shots on an empty board. Not for preschool children because of small-disc swallowing risks. The six-disc introduction draws on the world championship junior format.
