ABCD
Five Field Kono: 25 points. Unmarked diagonal crossings are not playing points.

Diagram key

A
Starting positions: 7 pieces each
B
Place pieces only on marked circular points.
C
Move 1 step to a diagonally adjacent empty point.
D
Occupy the opponent’s 7 starting points.

Materials

  • A 5 × 5-point board
  • 7 counters in each of two colours

How to play

  1. Place one colour across the five top-row points and at both ends of row two. Place the other across the bottom row and at both ends of row four. Choose who starts.
  2. Each turn, move one of your counters one step diagonally to an adjacent empty point. Move forwards or backwards, but never horizontally or vertically.
  3. There are no captures and no jumping over friendly or opposing counters. Only one counter occupies a point. Use empty diagonal routes towards the other side.
  4. First to occupy all seven of the opponent’s original starting points wins. A counter that has arrived may move again to clear a route.
  5. The same position with the same player to move three times is a draw. So is having no legal move. After the game, change who starts and try different routes.

Ways to adapt

Younger primary: discuss moves openly. Older primary and adults: ordinary play.
