Roundnet: An Introduction
Japanese name: ラウンドネット(入門)
Materials
- A purpose-made low roundnet and ball
- Markers for serving positions and the central restricted zone
- A scoreboard
How to play
- Stand two against two around the net. Mark serving positions about 2.6 m from its centre and a central 1 m zone from which final hits are not made. Practise the movements and agree to play to 13, winning by two.
- Check the receivers are ready, then serve onto the net from outside the serving line. Allow two attempts. Two failed attempts give the other team one point.
- The first return of a serve must use exactly three team touches before returning to the net. Later returns allow up to three, with no consecutive touches by the same player. Strike with hands; do not catch.
- After each return, the opponents receive. There are no fixed sides; move around the net. Make the final hit from outside the central 1 m zone and do not obstruct opponents. Stop and replay if a collision is likely.
- A floor drop, rim hit or excess touches gives opponents one point. Use a fixed serving order: the first server serves for one point, then each serves for two points. Finish at 13 or more with a two-point lead.
Ways to adapt
Not recommended for preschool or younger primary. Older primary: begin with cooperative rallies. This introduction gives the main principles and omits detailed competition rules such as pocket calls.
