★AB
5 × 5 board. Leave the center empty; each player has 12 pieces, placing 2 per turn.

Diagram key

A
Move to sandwich and capture opposing pieces.
B
The central star is safe.

Materials

  • A 5 × 5 grid with the central square marked
  • 12 counters in each of two colours

How to play

  1. Take twelve counters each in different colours. Alternate placing two at a time in empty squares, filling every square except the centre. There are no captures during placement.
  2. The player who placed the last two starts moving. Move one counter one square horizontally or vertically into an adjacent empty square. No diagonals or jumps.
  3. If your move sandwiches one opposing counter between two of yours in a straight line, capture it. Capture all qualifying directions at once. A counter moving voluntarily between enemies is not captured.
  4. A capturing counter may continue only if another move by that same counter makes another capture. A counter on the central square cannot be captured. Change turns when no further capture is available.
  5. If one side cannot move, the other makes an extra move to open a route. Capturing all opposing counters wins. If walls divide the sides so neither can attack, more remaining counters wins; equal counts draw.

Ways to adapt

Younger primary: practise sandwich captures with an adult. Not intended for preschool. For a shorter session, agree before starting that an undecided game after 20 minutes is a draw.
