Materials
- A kubb set: 10 kubbs, 1 king, 6 throwing batons and boundary markers
- Paper to record progress
How to play
- Mark a 5 × 8 m rectangle. Stand five kubbs on each short baseline and the king at the centre. Teams stand outside opposite baselines. Choose who throws first.
- Share six batons among the attacking team. Throw underarm with end-over-end rotation to knock down opposing kubbs. Nobody approaches targets until all throws finish.
- At the change of turn, the team whose kubbs fell throws those kubbs from its baseline into the opposing half. The opponents stand them where they land. These field kubbs must be targeted first.
- Knock down all field kubbs before targeting baseline kubbs. If any field kubbs remain, the opponents may advance their next throwing line to the remaining kubb nearest the centre.
- After knocking down every opposing kubb, return to your own baseline to aim at the king. Knocking it down last wins; knocking it down early loses. Change starting team and throwing assignments next game.
Ways to adapt
Younger primary: pair with an instructor and shorten the court. Not intended for preschool. This introduction omits tournament details about opening throw counts, penalties and raising kubbs.
