Materials

  • An octagonal shisima board with a centre point
  • 3 large counters in each of two colours

How to play

  1. Join the eight vertices of an octagon around its edge. Add four straight lines between opposite vertices, crossing at a central playing point. There are nine points altogether.
  2. As shown, place your three counters on three consecutive outer points. Put the opponent’s three on the opposite three consecutive points. Leave two outer points and the centre empty.
  3. Choose who starts. Alternate moving one counter along a line to an adjacent empty point. No jumping, stacking or capturing.
  4. Win by aligning your three counters on a straight line through the centre. The same position with the same player to move three times is a draw. Change who starts.

Ways to adapt

Younger primary: mark and check each winning three-point line through the centre with colour.
